In the Scriptures, Paul writes to the Corinthians, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.” (2 Corinthians 10:4-6, NKJV).
This is a powerful passage that speaks to the importance of examining our thoughts and bringing them into alignment with the truth of God’s word. Our thoughts can be a powerful force for good or for bad. They can lead us to make wise decisions or foolish ones. They help us to grow in our faith or fall away from it.
That’s why it’s so important to examine our thoughts on a regular basis. We need to be aware of what we’re thinking about and whether our thoughts are in line with God’s Word. If they’re not, it’s to our benefit to shift accordingly. We must also be willing to fight the good fight of faith to make necessary changes.
Here are some tips we can use to evaluate our thoughts and shift to align with what the Most High has prescribed so we can make progress and get purposed results.
Receive God’s truth and revelation. Setting aside time each day to pray and read the scriptures will enhance our capability to achieve this. As we read and pray, we can ask God to help us understand His truth and apply it in our lives.
Don’t try to ignore or deny the thoughts, even the negative ones. We need to think about what we’re thinking about. We must be honest with ourselves about our thoughts. Acknowledge and examine them.
Ask if the thoughts are aligned with God’s truth. Are they loving, kind, and compassionate? Are they pure, holy, and righteous? Are they full of faith, hope, and love? “Will my thoughts take me off course from where the Most High God wants me to be?”
Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ and cast down any imagination that tries to elevate itself against the knowledge of God and His truth. Release these thoughts and don’t dwell on or entertain them. We must submit our thoughts to Him, renew our mind, and allow Him to transform us. Intentionally think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, are of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy per Philippians 4:8, and with the vision He wants you to achieve.
It’s important to keep in mind that this is a process. It takes time and effort to learn to examine our thoughts and bring them into alignment with God’s truth. But, it’s worth it so that we may grow and produce the results that He wants. We can believe with certainty that this methodology is much better than automatic negative thoughts that have us bound thinking on things that are lies, dishonest, unlawful, contaminated, detestable, are of disrepute, immoral, disgraceful, and sorely unaligned with purpose.
Pray about this process of thought-provoking intentionality, keeping God in the loop. Thinking in line with God’s truth allows us to experience a life with the God of Peace (Philippians 4:9). Shalom!
