In ancient days, oil was used to honor guests, to consecrate kings and priests, and to signify joy and abundance. You can see in some scriptures, anointing the head with oil symbolized being chosen, renewed, and set apart. A good example is when Samuel anointed David, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David (1 Samuel 16:13).
Psalm 23:5, You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows.
In this verse, David acknowledges God’s personal care. He, the Most High Elohim, goes beyond providing basic needs and pours out honor and dignity on His people. Anointing represents God’s blessing, His Spirit, and His calling on one’s life.
We are chosen and set apart for a purpose. God places His hand of blessing upon us, giving strength, identity, and honor.
Furthermore, when a cup overflows, it means it cannot contain all that has been poured into it. God gives His children overflowing love, grace, peace, and joy. The overflow speaks of abundance, i.e., more than enough, blessings beyond measure. This is how He views life, and giving us His son is the point of proof. Jesus Christ himself stated, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
David is not only saying that God meets his needs, but he’s proclaiming that God goes above and beyond, filling his life with goodness.
God wants us to do more than merely “get by.” He delights in giving an overflowing life filled with His peace, joy, love, and provision.
We are called to live with confidence in God’s faithful love. When life feels dry, we can look around and see the overflow of God’s grace, His Word, His Spirit, and the many ways He provides beyond what we’ve imagined. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed (2 Corinthians 9:8).
When we walk with the Shepherd, we walk in divine abundance, honor, and victory. Anointed with His Spirit and chosen for His purpose, we are set apart by and for the Lord. Because He is generous, our cup does more than just fill; it overflows. His love, peace, and joy are more than enough for every situation. Today, rest in this truth: God’s blessings are greater than any battle, and His abundance never runs dry.
💖Steady Your Heart
- Pray: To experience the grace of God abounding toward you, that yields sufficiency in everything and abundance for every good deed. (2 Corinthians 9:8)
- Reflect: When you feel ordinary or overlooked, remember that you have been anointed by Him and carry His calling.
- Share: Perhaps someone else could use encouragement on why the Messiah came to save. Share so that they know and understand that they can have life and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)
Psalm 23 (NASB) [1] The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. [2] He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, [3] he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. [4] Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. [5] You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows.
