Psalm 23:6, “Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

As presented in prior posts on this blog Psalm 23 expresses the comfort, protection, and provision of God. He is our Shepherd. Verse 6 is a declaration of faith and assurance. David affirms that “goodness and mercy shall” follow us. This reveals the active nature of God’s love—He actively pursues us.

  • Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us: “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
  • James 1:17 echoes the same truth: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

God’s character is goodness itself, and His mercy is an unending source of forgiveness and compassion. When we belong to Him, His goodness and mercy pursue us daily—even when life feels overwhelming.

The Psalms continues by saying we will “dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” This is a lifestyle of remaining in God’s presence. To dwell is to make a home, to settle, and to abide. Living in God’s presence daily brings peace, direction, and strength. It also prepares us for eternity, when we will dwell with Him forever.

  • John 15:4 says: “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.”
  • Psalm 27:4 reflects David’s heart: “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.”

The Promise

Psalm 23:6 also points us forward to eternity. God’s goodness and mercy extends beyond this life. For those who trust in Christ, eternal life with God is our ultimate hope. This eternal perspective offers optimism for our present struggles. We walk with hope, knowing that God’s presence is not only with us now but will be our dwelling place forever.

  • John 14:2–3 offers this assurance: “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
  • Revelation 21:3–4 gives us a glimpse of eternity: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

When we make God our Shepherd, we can confidently declare, like David, that our future is secure, our present is guided, and our eternity is blessed. Psalm 23:6 invites us to rest in the assurance of God’s unfailing love. His lovingkindness is permanent, constant, and eternal.

Let this Psalm be a daily reminder that no matter where life takes you, God’s love is pursuing you, His presence is with you, and His promise is forever. Embrace the following devotional and experience the goodness of God today and forever.

Psalm 23 [1] The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. [2] He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, [3] he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. [4] Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. [5] You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. [6] Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
