Psalm 23 [1] The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. [2] He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, [3] he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. [4] Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Life is full of mountain-top moments, but we are also cognizant of its valleys. Psalm 23:4 speaks to those valley moments with a courage and confidence that can only come from knowing the Good Shepherd, the Most High God, Yahweh.
In a previous article, we recognized how God walks with us through the valley such that there’s no need to fear. We do not get stuck in the valley, but we come through on the other side in faith and perseverance. The Spirit of truth guides us into all truth. (John 16:13) We can rely on Him to walk with us and steer us toward the right direction for His expected outcome.
The Shepherd’s rod is our protection, defending us against predators, and with His staff He guides and rescues us. Together, our Shepherd’s rod and staff remind us that God fights for us and leads us to safety. They show God’s active care. He defends us and keeps us on the right path. God protects and directs us. His guidance and defense bring peace that the world cannot give. “The LORD will fight for you, while you keep silent.” Exodus 14:14 NASB
Psalm 23:4 reminds us that valleys are not signs of abandonment—they are opportunities for God to reveal His presence, power, and protection in our lives. The Shepherd who leads us beside still waters (Psalm 23:2) is the same One who walks with us through the shadows.
