The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
What we know about water is that it is paramount for a sheep’s survival. As stated in a previous post, sheep have an innate skittishness and could exhibit instinctive fear of running water. Their apprehension of being swept away by swift-flowing streams could cause them to refuse drinking from a turbulent brook. Our God, as the skilled Shepherd He is, leading us beside quiet waters, is a reminder that He is keenly aware of our timidity in life during adverse situations, and He makes us safe.
To paint the picture of His care and concern for us, we can envision shepherds of ancient times who would either locate naturally still pools or actively create them by moving stones strategically to form a calm drinking spot amidst a rushing stream. Quiet waters often evoke a profound sense of stillness, calm, and safety. The Hebrew term “menuchah” means to rest, resting place, repose, tranquility. This imagery stands in stark contrast to the chaos and turmoil often found in life’s circumstances. Yet, we understand God’s capacity to introduce calm and order into disquietude. We can depend on God’s waters of life for spiritual refreshment and renewal that is vital for our souls.
The conditions God creates for us are favorable for spiritual engagement and overcoming fear. He understands our anxieties and distractions that prevent us from receiving spiritual nourishment and keep us stuck, not moving forward in the things He called us to. We can commune with Him freely. We can drink safely, as the Messiah is our Living Water. Basking in His presence leads to spiritual refreshment and rejuvenation.
Being led by quiet or still waters provides a place for focus without distractions, and it fosters moments of renewal found in our life of prayer, meditation on scripture, and worship of the Most High. We can also acknowledge God’s abundant provision by recalling that in places where water is scarce, He ensures we have water in mass. We are reminded of the Most High Elohim’s immeasurable capacity to provide physical sustenance.
Profound trust in God is overarching in following His leading. God is proactive in creating the specific conditions for our rest and provision. The enduring comfort of what we learn of God’s ways is assuring that even in a chaotic, confused, and lawless world, true peace, provision, and restoration are found while resting in the intentional, loving care of our Good Shepherd, the Most High Elohim, and His son Jesus Christ.
